English lessons are top class at Cherry Tree
We are lucky enough to have professionals from the UK and overseas make up the care team at Cherry Tree.
As part of our commitment to them, we now offer free, in-house English lessons for more than three years to those who speak English is an additional language.
The courses are run local teacher Peter Savage-Jones, who delivers three one-hour lessons a week for two ‘students’ at a time. The lessons are individualised to meet the professional needs of nurses and carers and are designed to meet the communication needs of residents.
Lessons focus on topics relevant and specific to care, such as communicating with residents and colleagues, moving and handling, daily recording, care planning, partnership working and management of medication. All lessons are developed by the teachers to meet the needs of Cherry Tree and many of them are delivered through case scenarios relevant to their workplace.
Elaine Furlong, deputy manager at Cherry Tree, said: “We are very pleased to say that approximately 75% of all staff who speak English as an additional language have been supported through this scheme.”
